Restore the Beauty Your Marble Was Made For

Marble is one of the most stunning natural stones in any home or commercial space — and one of the most sensitive. Etching, dulling, scratching, and staining happen over time, no matter how carefully you care for it.

At Classic Marble Restoration, we specialize in bringing marble surfaces back to their original brilliance — in kitchens, bathrooms, showers, entryways, and commercial spaces throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Whether it’s a marble kitchen countertop that’s lost its shine, a bathroom floor with years of wear and water damage, or a shower surround covered in hard water deposits and etching, our professional marble restoration process corrects the damage and restores a smooth, consistent, beautiful finish. No replacement needed — just expert care from a team that has been doing this since 1992.

Why Marble Needs Special Care

Marble is a metamorphic stone that is naturally porous and chemically sensitive. That’s what makes it so beautiful — and so easy to damage with everyday use. Unlike granite or slate, marble reacts to acids. That means common household items like lemon juice, wine, coffee, vinegar-based cleaners, and even some soaps can etch the surface — leaving dull, cloudy marks that won’t clean away no matter how hard you scrub.
Over time, foot traffic wears down the finish. Hard water leaves mineral deposits. Improper cleaning products accelerate deterioration. And what started as a stunning marble floor or countertop begins to look tired, dull, and damaged.

This is exactly what we fix — and we’ve been fixing it for homeowners and businesses throughout the Twin Cities since 1992.

Tip: If you want to protect your marble top from future etching after restoration, ask us about MORE™ Anti-Etch™ — a treatment specifically designed to protect marble and calcium-based stone from acid damage.

Common Marble Problems We Solve

If your marble doesn’t look the way it should, you’re not alone. These are the issues we hear about most:

  • Etching — dull, cloudy marks left by acidic spills on countertops, floors, and shower walls
  • Loss of shine — marble that once had a beautiful polish now looks flat and lifeless
  • Scratches and scuffs — surface marks from daily use, furniture, foot traffic, or improper cleaning tools
  • Staining — discoloration from wine, coffee, oils, rust, or hard water that won’t come out with regular cleaning
  • Hard water deposits — white, chalky mineral buildup in showers and around fixtures
  • Uneven surface texture — worn areas, lippage, or rough patches in high-traffic zones

If you’re seeing any of these in your home or commercial space, marble restoration — not replacement — is almost always the answer.

Where We Restore Marble in Your Home or Business

Marble shows up in some of the most used — and most visible — spaces in a home or commercial property. We restore marble surfaces in:

  • Kitchen countertops and islands high-use surfaces prone to etching from food and drink
  • Bathroom floors and walls — where moisture, soap, and hard water cause ongoing damage
  • Shower surrounds and shower floors — one of the most challenging environments for marble
  • Vanity tops — where cosmetics, toothpaste, and cleaning products etch daily
  • Entryways and foyers — high-traffic areas where foot traffic dulls the finish over time
  • Fireplace surrounds and hearths — decorative marble that deserves to be a focal point
  • Staircase treads, landings, and floors — where wear is heaviest and safety matters
  • Hotel lobbies, restaurant dining rooms, and office common areas — commercial marble that needs to make an impression

If it’s marble and it’s in the Minneapolis or St. Paul area, we can restore it.

How We Restore Your Marble

Every marble surface is different — the stone type, the finish, the age, the damage, and how it’s been maintained all factor into the right approach. We assess your marble carefully before any work begins and explain exactly what we’ll do and what results to expect. Our process typically includes:

  • Assessment — we evaluate the stone, identify damage types, and determine the right restoration approach for your specific marble and finish
  • Cleaning — deep cleaning to remove surface buildup, hard water deposits, and contaminants before restoration begins
  • Honing — grinding away surface scratches, etching, and unevenness to create a smooth, consistent base
  • Polishing — bringing the marble to your desired finish level, from a soft satin sheen to a high-gloss mirror polish
  • Sealing — applying a professional-grade impregnating sealer to protect the restored surface against future staining and etching
  • Final inspection — we review the finished surface with you before we consider the job complete

We’ll recommend either a honed (matte/satin) or polished (high-shine) finish based on the stone type, the location, and your preference and we’ll explain the tradeoffs of each so you can make the best decision for your space.

Honed or Polished — Which Finish Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we get is whether to restore marble to a honed finish or a polished finish. Here’s a simple way to think about it:

Polished Marble
A high-gloss, reflective finish that brings out the depth, veining, and natural color of the stone. Stunning in lower-traffic areas like dining rooms, fireplace surrounds, and feature walls. More prone to showing new etching and scratches because the contrast against the high shine is visible.

Honed Marble
A smooth, matte or satin finish with no reflective shine. More forgiving in high-traffic and high-use areas like kitchen floors, bathroom floors, and shower walls — etching is less visible on a honed surface. Still beautiful, just softer in appearance.

Both finishes can be sealed and protected. We’ll walk you through which makes the most sense for your specific marble, your space, and how you use it before any work begins.

Tip: Want to go a step further? After restoration, ask us about Sealing and Protecting options — including impregnating sealers, enhancing sealers, and MORE™ Anti-Etch™ to keep your marble looking its best long after we leave.

Did You Know?

  • Marble etching is not a stain, it’s actual surface damage caused by acid reacting with the calcium carbonate in the stone.
  • Regular cleaning will never remove it, but professional restoration will
  • Vinegar, lemon juice, and many “natural” cleaners are harmful to marble and one of the leading causes of etching in Twin Cities homes
  • A professionally sealed marble surface resists staining and etching far better than unsealed stone sealing after restoration is one of the best investments you can make
  • Replacing marble countertops or flooring costs significantly more than professional restoration in most cases, restoration delivers comparable results at a fraction of the price

A few basics to keep in mind:

  • Always use pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaners — never vinegar, bleach, or ammonia-based products on marble
  • Wipe up acidic spills immediately — wine, citrus, coffee, and soda can etch marble within minutes
  • Use coasters, trivets, and placemats on marble countertops and tabletops
  • Have your marble professionally resealed periodically to maintain protection

FAQs

Etching can absolutely be fixed — it is not permanent. Etching is surface-level damage to the marble’s finish, not to the stone itself. Professional honing removes the etched layer and restores a smooth, consistent surface. After honing, the marble can be polished back to its original shine or left with a honed finish. Most homeowners are amazed at how completely the etching disappears.

This depends on the condition of the surface and what finish you want. If your marble has scratches and etching, it will need honing first to level the surface — then polishing if you want a high shine. If the marble is already in decent shape but just dull, polishing alone may be enough. When we assess your marble before starting, we’ll tell you exactly what it needs and why.

Most residential marble restoration jobs — a kitchen countertop, bathroom floor, or shower — are completed in one day. Larger projects, like an entire marble floor in a home or a commercial lobby, may take two to three days. We’ll give you a clear timeline before we start so you can plan accordingly.

Cost depends on the square footage, the condition of the marble, the finish requested, and whether sealing is included. Restoration is almost always significantly less expensive than replacement. We offer free on-site estimates — the best way to get an accurate number is to have us come take a look and give you a straightforward, no-obligation quote.

With proper care and the right cleaning products, professionally restored and sealed marble can look beautiful for many years. Avoid acidic cleaners, use pH-neutral stone-safe products for daily cleaning, and have the marble professionally maintained periodically. We’re happy to give you a care guide for your specific marble after the job is complete.

Yes — marble showers are one of the most common restoration projects we do. Hard water, soap scum, moisture, and the wrong cleaning products all take a toll on marble shower walls and floors. We clean, hone, and restore the marble, then apply a professional sealer appropriate for wet environments. The result is a shower that looks brand new.

Yes. We use professional-grade products that are safe for residential use. There will be some noise during the honing and polishing process, and the area will need to be kept clear while we work. We’ll let you know when the surface is ready for normal use — typically within a few hours after sealing cures.

In many cases, yes. Chips and small cracks can often be filled and repaired as part of the restoration process. The repairability depends on the size and location of the damage. We’ll assess this during our initial visit and let you know what’s achievable before any work begins.

Absolutely. We restore marble in hotel lobbies, restaurant dining rooms, office buildings, retail spaces, and commercial restrooms throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul. Commercial marble takes heavier wear and benefits enormously from professional restoration and a regular maintenance program. We’re happy to discuss scheduled maintenance for commercial properties.
